At the Tate Modern there are various exhibitions to look at. 'Word.Sound.Power' was one of the many exhibitions in the museum. The exhibition consisted of several intriguing pieces. Each artist presented, elaborates on the dynamic created by the use of words in speech or text and sound as a voice.
One piece in particular by Lawrence Abu Hamdam was an audio documentary 'The Whole Truth', which is analysed by the 'layered voice analysis'. This piece almost acts as a lie detector, which measures responses to stress and tension from the body. The machine displayed how the voice can show a voice analysis in order of accuracy, this being from inaccuracy and lies to excitement and truth. The tape had various audio extracts gathered from a wide variety of sources. The piece was very insightful and it was interesting to see when the people on the audio clips were lying on the detector.
Another piece by Mitheu Sen is 'I am a poet' (2013). She describes the piece as 'not being bound by rules of grammar, diction, vocabulary and syntax', the poems in this book suggest another medium of understanding. Being that only you speaks this language as you are left to understand and interpret the poem in your own way. The artist stores the speakers voices, using them in there work. By speaking this abstract non-sense writing Mitheu Sen is wanting to highlight that through language you can access power. Each viewer/ speaker is contributing to the sound montage of individual voices, by putting this in poetry and song I feel creates more emotion and feel to it.
I really enjoyed both pieces in the 'Word.sound.power' exhibition. It fascinates me how the use of words in speech or text, sound as voice and sound as song can create a sense of power or take that power away. I would defiantly view this exhibition again and I would love to learn more about the power of the voice and the effect it has.
